Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “değersiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine demetlanmasıyla oluşan kısaltarak polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız sözıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok nüshada polipeptit ast birimi barındırır). Baş ayırt peptitlerin kısaltarak, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino hamız, özge amino asite ötümlü, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle demetlanır. Polipeptid örgüsına tıkızlan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid demetlarıyla demetlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, takribî 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine tıkızlan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, azade amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin özge ucundaki azade α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
